The obtaining of plane-section X-ray
photographs, which show a `slice' through any
object. Crystal detectors and amplifiers can
be used that have a sensitivity 100 times
greater than X-ray film, and, in conjunction
with a computer system, can detect, for
example, the difference between a brain
tumour and healthy brain tissue. Godfrey
Hounsfield was a leading pioneer in the
development of this technique. In modern
medical imaging there are several types, such
as the CAT scan (computerized axial
tomography).
